Pausing is an act of love.

Pausing gives us extra room to take things in. It allows us time to listen to ourselves before responding or reacting. We pause so we can pay attention to ourselves, to others, and to the world around us in a more open and compassionate way.

Overview

In my 30 years of working with students around the world, there’s never been a time with more outer and inner turmoil. Most of us are living our lives on high alert. Our days are a series of reactions to whatever is happening around us in each moment—unrelenting urgent texts, arguments with loved ones, unexpected illnesses or pain, breaking news notifications. Is there more to life than the stress and overwhelm we feel much of the time?

Pausing not only sets the conditions for expanding our perspectives and allowing us to respond intentionally rather than react, but it also forms the foundation for deep relaxation—an essential tool for regulating our nervous system and for interrupting the long-held narratives and patterns that keep us stuck in habitual behaviors.

In today’s challenging and divisive world, THE POWER OF THE PAUSE offers a vital tool—validated by groundbreaking research in neuroscience and psychology and drawing from the ancient traditions of Buddhism and yoga—for making intentional choices, and relating to ourselves and each other with presence and care.

In just a minute and a half, we can train ourselves to respond to life’s difficulties with greater calm and clarity, while also opening us to receive and appreciate the beauty and joy that coexist with hardship.

—Sarah Powers, author of Insight Yoga and cofounder of the Insight Yoga Institute

“In the face of an emergency, it may seem counterintuitive to Pause before you act. But, in the face of a threat or a surge of anger, Pausing first is actually a superpower. . . . Jillian Pransky gives us step-by-step guidance on how to practice doing just that. Don’t wait until you’re upset to start the practice. “The title says it all. The Power of the Pause is a book I’m recommending to all my patients, and here is why: the techniques in this book are the ones I recommend to my clients when they are up in the wee hours of the morning and can’t go to sleep. Seriously, get the book, read it, and do the exercises—it will change your life.”

—Michael J. Breus, PhD DABSM, bestselling author and founder of thesleepdoctor.com

“Jillian illuminates the magic, simplicity, and essential nature of Pausing, showing how it is crucial for us to remain truly humane. The difference between reaction and response often lies in a Pause—a subtlety we frequently overlook. I applaud Jillian’s courage, simplicity, and sense of urgency in addressing this important subject.”

—Indu Arora, author of Yoga: Ancient Heritage Tomorrow’s Vision

“There are a lot of how-to books out there, but what we need right now is a how-not-to book—and this is it. How not to react, how not to give into the ‘fear circuitry’ that seems to get triggered too fast to be stopped. It can be done. There’s a lot of hope in these pages. Clear, gentle, compelling and, in my view, wildly necessary, this book helped me.”
